Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed as a young little girl. This forced her mother to help support her family through work as waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth went to school and was poor throughout Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. In the midst of only two years in school the young woman left to pursue an acting profession. It was a difficult path to take. Even though she got a job as a hat check girl in New York posing as a woman for a magazine, no theatre jobs was offered. After working as a hat-check girl in a nightclub, she quit and returned to Boston. She worked as an usherette in the mornings and appeared at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first acting position that was permanent. She earned a bachelor's degree in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
